A Brief History of St Ann's High School, Secunderabad.

To impart education to the poor and needy the school was started on 1st April 1871 with 25 orphans and 3 boarders by the sisters of St. Ann a Religious Congregation committed to the cause of education.

In 1883 the strength increased to 130 pupils In November 1884 it was officially inspected and recognized as a Middle School. From its start the school presented pupils for the Middle School Examination for the Madras Matriculation.

At the very start of the activities in the Mission field, the sisters saw the necessity of having the orphans separated from the boarders and the day scholars. A small house in the same compound was cleaned up and the first orphanage in India was started in it. In 1884, the sisters were able to construct a more suitable building for the orphans. This building shelters orphans and destitute girls who are often rescued from unwholesome surroundings. This orphanage was named as St. Joseph’s Orphanage. St. Joseph’s Middle School was attached to the Orphanage.

When the school started in 1871 St. Ann’s and St. Joseph’s were all one. After some time it was convenient to separate them into St. Ann’s High School and St. Joseph’s Middle School attached to the Orphanage.

In 1885 a grant was sanctioned by the Resident. This was later enhanced by the Nizam Grant to Rs. 80/- per month 1909.

In May 1902 it was recognized by Madras as a European Aided High School.

In 1911 the Madras Matriculation was abandoned for a more suitable Cambridge examination which was later superseded by the Indian School Certificate Examination. From 1915 candidates were sent up for the Cambridge School Certificate.

The strength grew to 209 in 1920, 341 in 1930, and 487 in 1940.
During 1922 to 1934 the Science Laboratory was built and equipped.

From 1933 till 1941 candidates were also sent up for the H.S.L.C. introduced by the Nizam, followed later by the H.S.C,. and now by the S.S.C.

Throughout these years candidates were also sent up for the Trinity College of Music Examination which is still being carried as on date.

In 1938 Mr. K. Burnett, Inspector of European Aided schools wrote: “This is the only European aided High School in the administered area. At this time the school has been in existence for over 50 years, is extremely well managed and very efficient in every respect. There is no doubt as to the valuable place it fills in the educational arrangements of Secunderabad.”

In 1956 –57 the first batch was sent up for the H.S.C. examination from then on the school ran parallel courses, the students choosing the H.S.C. or the Cambridge course according to their liking and their parents’ wish.
The strength of the school in 1949 was about 644, but by 1961 it grew to 2500.

In 1963 the Kindergarten Section given permission to separate itself from the main School, to function as a separate unit. It was granted separate recognition but was not eligible for grant in aid. A few days later on 22-6-1963 the main school was granted permanent recognition with grant in aid. However at the same time management opted out of grant in aid to continue as a private unaided school.

For many years boys were kept in the school up to the age of eight years but it was found necessary to stop admitting boys, so as not to refuse admission to girls and in 1966 the last batch of boys completed their studies.

There were three sections in each imparting instruction according to the H.S.C. syllabus which later in1970 became the S.S.C. course run by the State Education Department. Since the school had by grown very large a decision was taken to bifurcate the S.S.C. section from the I.S.C. section thus creating two separarte High Schools each with a different syllabus and course of studies completely independent of each other. While bifurcating the school the St. Joseph’s Middle School, was amalgamated with the SSC Section of the St. Ann’s High School. The Kindergarten is a separate section where the children are prepared for both schools. The amalgamation and the birfurcation took place on 11-6-1970

On 1st of April 1971 our school celebrated the Centenary - 1871 to 1971. We are grateful to God for giving us the opportunity to serve him through education to our young ones which is the mission of our congregation ST. ANN OF PROVIDENCE.

In 1999 the Regional Joint Director of School Education was pleased to grant permission to the two additional sections which were functioning besides the section that was permanently recognized. At that time the strength of the school was 2400 with a staff of 65 members. Every year about 230 students are sent up for the S.S.C. examination.
